- How are high Radon levels fixed? Have you heard of Radon? There has been a lot of effort the last few years to educate the public about this common issue and why it should be addressed, but do you know what is involved in reducing Radon levels inside YOUR home? As licensed Radon Mitigation professionals, our team at Disaster Blaster is here to answer this common question. But first, what is Radon? A radioactive gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water, you can't see it, taste it, or smell it yet it can seep into your home through cracks in the foundation, gaps around pipes, or even through the water supply. According to the EPA, Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, right behind smoking. That's why it's crucial for homeowners to understand how to detect and resolve Radon issues. How do you know if you have high Radon in your home? Since you can't see, taste, or smell Radon gas, it could be in your home without you even realizing it. Fortunately, specialized Radon testing is available that can identify Radon issues so that you can have them addressed to ensure your home is safe for you and your family. Both home Radon test kits are available that get mailed into a laboratory for analysis, as well as professional testing that is available through many home inspectors that are licensed to provide Radon testing services. Whichever testing method you choose, the Radon result will be reflected in Picocuries per Liter . If your Radon level is four Picocuries per Liter or higher, the EPA recommends that you take corrective action and have a Radon Mitigation System installed by a qualified and licensed Radon Mitigation Company. How are Radon issues resolved? This is where the real magic happens - Radon Mitigation. The most common and effective method is called sub slab depressurization. Here's how it works. A licensed Radon Mitigation Contractor drills a hole through the basement floor and installs a suction point that draws air from beneath the house. This pipe is connected to a fan, typically mounted outside or in the attic, that is designed to run continuously to reduce the Radon gas that is able to enter the house. This Radon Mitigation System then vents the Radon gas above the roof line where it dissipates into the outside air. The beauty of this system is its simplicity and effectiveness. It doesn't require major renovations and it can reduce Radon levels by up to 99%. In most cases, Radon Mitigation Systems can be installed in less than a day. During the installation of the Radon Mitigation System, your local Disaster Blaster will also address common issues that can allow Radon guests to enter the home more easily, such as cracks in floors and walls, sump pump pits and basin waterproofing systems and dirt or gravel floors in basements or crawl spaces. If your home has a private well, it's also important to test your water for Radon as it can enter through the water supply. Specialized aeration systems or granular activated carbon filters can remove Radon from water. If levels are high. Please ask your local Disaster Blaster for assistance with Radon Mitigation Systems for water as well. We hope that answers some questions you had about resolving Radon issues in your home.
