- Maybe you recently discovered some mold growth in your basement or attic that you don't remember being there, or you noticed some discoloration under your kitchen sink or on your bathroom ceiling. You may be asking yourself 'how you could have not noticed that before'. If it makes you feel better, you're not alone. Many homeowners are shocked by how rapid mold growth can develop given the right environment. In fact, it's not uncommon for visible mold growth to begin to develop in as little as two or three days. But how is that possible? Keep in mind that mold is a living organism, so environmental factors can have a huge impact on the rate of growth as well as the extent of overall contamination. Let's take a look at what mold needs to grow. Moisture or Humidity. Mold likes damp, dark areas with limited airflow. As a result, you'll often find mold growth inside wall cavities, inside or behind cabinets, under sinks, and in areas like basements and attics. These areas don't just allow mold to often develop undisturbed due to the fact that homeowners may not notice it right away. But these areas also commonly have moisture or humidity issues that encourage the development of mold on surfaces. While most people believe that mold requires a lot of moisture to grow, that's actually not true. A little humidity that is condensing on surfaces is not only plenty of moisture for mold to develop, but actually an environment that many molds prefer. A Food Source. In addition to having the right moisture or humidity for growth, mold also will need a food source. Fortunately for mold, and unfortunately for us, mold finds most of the building materials in our homes delicious from wood components like subflooring and framing to the paper backing on drywall. This is why mold can be such a significant problem when it's given the opportunity to grow in our homes. In some cases, mold can even get a boost from organic materials in the water itself, such as in cases where the water may have come from a dirty source like a sewage backup, or picked up contaminants along the way, such as with a roof leak. This can allow mold growth to develop even faster. The Right Temperature. Mold will develop faster in warmer, humid temperatures, but that is not a requirement for mold growth. Any temperature that is comfortable to us will also be comfortable to mold, making our homes the perfect environment for mold growth year round. So if you look at the requirements of mold growth, a moisture or humidity issue, the availability of a food source, and the right temperature, the rate of growth can be impacted in a variety of ways, allowing for mold to grow extremely quickly if provided with the right environment. This is why it's so important to address moisture issues as quickly as possible to prevent mold growth in the first place. If you do happen to discover mold growth has already begun in your home, it's important to have this addressed properly by professional Mold Remediation Experts, such as your local Disaster Blaster, who have the necessary training and equipment to address these issues effectively. It's important to keep in mind that if a mold issue is not addressed properly, it could become much worse and could even contaminate other parts of your home.
