What is a Polar Vortex?

While the term “polar vortex” may seem like a new thing given how often it has been referenced in the news over the last few years, it is not.  In fact, a polar vortex always exists at our poles, it simply strengthens and weakens throughout the year.

The polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and cold air that exists at both the North and South poles.  The term “vortex” refers to the counter-clockwise flow of air that keeps the colder air near the poles.

The polar vortex however is not always stable, and as a result, the polar vortex will sometime expand, sending frigid air southward with the jet stream where it can create extremely cold temperatures in much of the northern hemisphere.  This can create extremely cold weather that intensifies the potential for winter storm damage.

What are the most common types of winter storm damage?

Winter storm damage can be seen in a variety of insurance claims and property damage that is common in the winter months, such as:

  • Frozen Pipes / Broken Pipes
  • Ice Dams
  • Damage from the weight of ice and snow
  • Water intrusion from roof leaks or leaks around windows or siding
  • Damage to building components due to extreme cold, snow, or ice

Disaster Blaster has the experience and tools necessary to identify winter storm damage and what steps will be necessary to effectively address it.  Our emergency winter storm damage response technicians will be able to address your roof tarping or emergency boardup needs, assess water intrusion and water damage issues so that they can begin any necessary drying, and assist with any necessary repairs!

How does Disaster Blaster help after a winter storm?

While you’re keeping warm inside during the cold winter months, your home is exposed to the harsh cold, snow, and ice that accompanies it.  This can result in significant damage to your home including roof and shingle damage, ice dams, frozen pipes and pipe breaks, and collapse of trees and structures due to the weight of ice and snow.

When the cold of winter takes its toll on your home or property, Disaster Blaster is here to help.  Our trained professionals will be able to assess the issue, prevent further damage, and begin the mitigation process to address any moisture intrusion.  Disaster Blaster is a full service company able to assist with the emergency services like tarping and water mitigation as well as the repairs to address your winter storm damage.

Does Homeowners Insurance cover Winter Storm Damage?

Cold temperatures, polar vortex events, snow, and ice can cause a variety of issues for a property.  While these damages are most often covered by homeowners insurance policies, there are exceptions to every rule.  If the damages are as a result of negligence or failure to maintain the property, such as cases where heat was not maintained and / or the property wasn’t properly winterized, the resulting damages may not be covered.  However, as these circumstances are relatively uncommon, most property owners will find that winter storm damage is covered by their insurance policy.

What if Mold begins to develop?

Mold can develop quickly following water intrusion from a winter storm event.  As a result, it’s important to hire qualified professionals able to address mold issues as well.

Disaster Blaster technicians are trained Mold Remediation professionals, able to assist with not only the necessary water mitigation and drying services, but the mold remediation as well.  As a full service company, our professionals will be able to assess your property for mold issues that may have begun and develop a response plan to address all of these issues together.
